Carl has taught, literally, thousands of students to succeed on the GRE, and thousands more the ACT, SAT, LSAT, and GMAT, over a career spanning over two decades in the test preparation world. Originally an academic, he holds advanced degrees from Yale, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Georgia, and since leaving academia he has taught, tutored, and written content for Magoosh, Kaplan, Harvard Prep, SuccessPrep, Parliament Tutors, Varsity Tutors, and many other companies, and has since founded his own company, Ivory Tower Tutoring. He was also, for many years, the chief writer for Barron''s GMAT product line.

Clients preparing for the GRE are generally motivated and ready to work hard to attain their desired score. Where I come in as a coach is not only with subject matter knowledge, but the ability to help you focus your preparation and make the best use of your time. I'll also teach you strategies specific to the test—the way questions are worded and the way passages are structured can often give you important clues once you know what to look for. Furthermore, I have many years of experience as a classroom teacher and tutor, especially in math. I am able to draw on those other experiences to help GRE students by suggesting other resources to shore up particular areas that need work. Many of my GRE students have strengthened their mathematical problem-solving ability by going outside the bounds of GRE prep books; they were then able to apply these skills to the actual GRE.

The only way to do well on the GMAT and the GRE is to understand the material and to know how to answer the questions. Cheats and guessing strategies don’t work, and you can’t “beat” or “outsmart” the tests. I am a Certified Teacher who has taught the material that appears on these tests in school. MY APPROACH IS TO TEACH YOU THE CONCEPTS AND SKILLS YOU NEED TO ANSWER THE TEST QUESTIONS CORRECTLY. I scored in the 99th percentile on the GMAT and the SAT, and I have a thorough understanding of the tests. I am a writer, with excellent language skills. As a Certified Teacher, I have 20-plus years’ experience as a teacher, tutor, test prep coach, and business trainer. I am a former teacher of high school math – exactly the math that appears on the tests – and of English grammar and writing. I am a trained and certified teacher. I have a Bachelor of Education degree and Adult Education training. I also have an MBA and have worked on Wall St as a Vice President at a major financial institution, as well as in several other business and management positions.

It often happens that one's natural habits/practices form the strongest basis for excellence in a certain area -- a good reason for why none of my friends batted an eyelash when they heard I had begun training students in the GRE. Essentially the only books I ever read are the classics of Victorian age European and American literature, whose heightened word choices provide me with a unique appreciation/understanding for the vocabulary questions of the GRE (now a full 1/2 of the verbal questions!). But that's not all. I've had the privilege of training students in the GRE for around a decade, and am highly versed in the reading comprehension, logic, and quantitative questions. Perhaps that's why more than 60% of the students I take on are able to crank up their cumulative score by 12 points or more. Not only that, but 93% of my GRE students end up with thick envelopes -- the ones containing acceptance letters -- mailed to them by their first and second choices of grad school.

I graduated in three years from the University of Miami with a Bachelors degree in the fields of Environmental Science and Economics. After 6 years of experience and over 100 students coached, with many receiving score increases greater than 100 points on the SAT and ACT, I decided to pursue GRE preparation. I am confidently able to solve the hardest questions given in the math and verbal sections of the GRE, and I am confident that I can help you on your journey. I also worked for a test prep company where I gained valuable skills and insights into guaranteeing score increases with all the students I worked with. I have a proven step by step system to raise your score. It starts with learning the key concepts that are tested and then applying these concepts in real test questions from tests. Having worked as a mentor / coach for the Global Governance Initiative throughout my consulting career and applied to top graduate degrees myself, I understand what it takes to hit your target score. Despite having a very limited quant background, I got a perfect score on my first try on the Verbal Reasoning section (170) and a high enough Quantitative Reasoning score (162) to get me interviews at Yale, Harvard, and Berkeley.

On the GRE, I scored a 168 on the Verbal, a 162 on the Quantitative, and a 5.5 on the Writing sections. The GRE is a game with rules to beating it. Hi there! My name is Avi and I have taught the GRE/GMAT for 18 years. More importantly, I have written actual questions for the test and know the hidden patterns and strategies that I can teach you in order to be successful. For those who have math anxiety and/or test taking anxiety in general, I also address the psychological aspects of the test. My students are typically ones who are targeting the top schools and need a score in the 90th percentile and above. In my years teaching standardized tests, what I have found important is to provide students with a clear and customized syllabus of exactly what they ought to be doing between our private sessions. I do that using my own materials that I have written and developed.
