I am a journalist with more than a decade of experience at many of the world's top newsrooms, including CNN, Daily Beast, USA Today, and Psychology Today. I am the author of "The Long Haul: How Long Covid Survivors Are Revolutionizing Healthcare," published by MIT Press/Penguin Random House. As a published author, I have been featured in CNN, Newsweek, LA Times, PBS NewsHour, Democracy Now, Science, The Lancet, and many others. My book was called "a book we need right now" by Senator Tim Kaine, and was praised as "the story of Long Covid as it should be told" by Pulitzer Prize winner Ed Yong of The Atlantic. I have given talks about the book and biomedical innovation at Stanford Medicine School, Dartmouth Medical School, the Agency for Health Research Quality, and many others. I have taught book writing workshops with the Harvard Kennedy School, and frequently work with private clients, both on book-length projects as well as op-ed submissions to major outlets such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Policy. I've spent my career doing technical writing where ideas have to be precise and clear to expert readers who are deciding whether the work moves forward. To this end, I'm a subject matter expert in crafting research abstracts, concept papers, and technical narratives that persuade expert reviewers at agencies like the Department of Energy and other entities. The challenge here is communicating that idea is both interesting, and worth funding. That work requies the same skills used in strong academic and business writing: framing a research problem clearly, situating it in existing work, stating a contribution without overselling, and anticipating skeptical questions from people who know the field. Alongside that, I've guided engineers, scientists, and early researchers through proposals, white papers, and publishable drafts where the challenge tends to be clarity and structure. I know how it feels to stare at a blank page with a good idea and no clean way to organize it, because I've been there myself!

I have moved from dancing with light and exposure in photography into dancing with words thoughts and feelings. As an accidental writer, I had a brilliant girlfriend who was a poet laureate and invited me to come along to a writers group meeting. When we eventually went our own ways the group insisted I remain. I was surrounded by giants each in their own category. One a would become a Pulitzer prize winning columnist for the LA Times. Another, was a community leader for the arts at La Plaza de la Raza. Then another was a Hollywood talent with William Morris Agency and yet another was a former Broadway dancer, a fabulous queen who became a notorious storyteller in books about healing. Then there was me - the absolute beginner. The thing is ... they humored me. They were patient with me. They loved me while I stumbled and fell and got back up again in my efforts. This nurturing accelerated my learning in a way that felt like a rocket sled ride going full blast towards something that resembled my own authentic voice. I was the Petite prince amongst royalty and they guided me in way that I recognize is how I guide emerging artists as writers now. It's an initiation into practice, theme, and presentation. This includes editing, sounding boards, notes and eventually public readings. No matter your position, if you can not elegantly express your wants, needs and point of view your growth personally and professionally is going to be stunted, frustrated and exhausting.
