I have been tutoring GMAT Verbal for 10 years and have very clear and precise strategies that have helped dozens of students achieve their goals. As a lover of language, a teacher of English, and a writer myself, I have the skills to integrate all things verbal with the necessary standardized test taking methods.

I believe that my 8,000+ hours of full-time GMAT coaching experience over the past 12 years, the demonstrated success of my students in achieving the scores they need to further their careers, and the long list of top schools to which my students have been accepted speaks to my solid qualifications.

Between the actual exams, tryout exams for jobs, and personal diagnostic exams, I have never scored below 99th-percentile on the LSAT, GMAT, nor GRE. I started in the industry in 2002 with Kaplan, and founded my own company in 2005. I was one of Veritas's (acquired by Varsity Tutors as their elite program) first instructors and a go-to instructor for most of their existence, teaching literally coast-to-coast until moving off of their grid in 2017. Career highlights include successfully writing and then teaching my own LSAT course, teaching over a dozen GMAT classes at Booth School of Business at University of Chicago, and tutoring around Silicon Valley at locations such as the Google campus, Stanford, and the San Francisco Financial District. In short, I've taught and tutored thousands of students within the elite model used by Veritas, Manhattan, and others, in which the highest-scoring instructors teach in small classrooms and focus on higher-end analytic aspects of the exam. I wrote my own LSAT course, and I contributed to the highly-regarded Veritas course and books. My students have gone on to attend the best law and business schools in the world. Most important, I love teaching and Leland gives me the opportunity to fill my schedule helping students like you!

I've been building and investing in companies for the past decade. After graduating from Yale, I had a couple stints in consulting and global health before finding my way to startups. I started two companies, one a surplus food marketplace and the other in office management software. Neither was extraordinarily successful, but gave me a taste for helping companies go 0-1 and allowed me to meet some exceptional founders and builders. I started angel investing, realized I enjoyed investing/advising, and went to Wharton/Lauder with the intent of exploring venture capital (and to get better at Chinese). While in business school, I met Contrary and started working full time while still in my 2nd year. After graduating, I stayed on, became a partner 1.5 years in, and led deals in a number of great companies (Orchard Robotics, Nomic, Endeavor AI, etc.). I transitioned to a board partner/advisor role this past summer and have spent most of my time since helping build companies and continuing to angel invest. My angel portfolio includes companies like Ramp, Warp, Clara, Slingshot AI, and many others.

The GMAT is a fascinating test compared to others I have coached for (SAT, MCAT, USMLE, etc) if for no other reason than because of its unique scoring and administration system. The GMAT is also differentiate from other professional school exams in that test takers are working professionals applying to business school in parallel with full-time work (as opposed to students with more flexible schedules) and the exam tests topics that most examinees have not directly used in years (think: geometry, multivariable algebra, etc). Each of these features add a dimension to the learning curve which can either make the exam especially challenging OR can be leveraged to accelerate score improvement relative to other examinees. When I coach GMAT clients, we focus on the HOW more than the what. Specifically: how to prepare for the test (what to do each day of prep) and how to take the test (what to do when at the computer on exam day). Focused review of specific content can also be useful on a case by case basis for topics that are particularly problematic for the client and also highly represented on the exam.

I spent a VERY long time studying the GMAT only to come up very short on GMAT math. Twice. Then I spent weeks doing nothing but studying those who ACED the exam, with an emphasis on those who did so after having middling scores. The result was a big change in my study and practice process. And I went from 54th percentile math scores TWICE after lots and lots of study, to getting the effective high score on the GMAT Math after only a couple months of study with my new process. I will show you exactly how I did it so you have the same framework and standards I had.
