I am an incoming medical student at Northwestern University, a top 15 US MD program and my dream medical school. During my application process, I interviewed at additional elite programs such as NYU and Cornell. Through tens of hours of admissions research and years of planning, I was able to develop a strategy that led to admissions success without taking any gap years. As someone with a passion for mentoring, I hope to guide other pre-medical students through building their strongest possible application that conveys their unique story, and ultimately gets them accepted into a dream program. Two applicants with the exact same experiences and metrics can craft wildly different applications and levels of admissions success. I will help ensure that your hard work, dedication, and strong fit to become a physician are highlighted to admissions committees, along with the attributes that make you stand out.

I am currently a student at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana/Champaign, Illinois. I spent one-year on the admissions committee at my school. As part of that experience, I reviewed dozens of applications and I heard directly from the director of admissions what they were looking for in applicants. I know how to write a stand-out personal statement because I wrote them myself, I read plenty of them that caught my attention, and I know which ones were easy to forget. As a student physician currently pursuing my MD at Harvard Medical School on a full scholarship, I bring a wealth of academic excellence and practical experience to my role as a Medical School and Adnissions coach. With a Summa Cum Laude graduation from Sewanee: University of the South, where I studied Biochemistry and Neuroscience, I've consistently demonstrated my commitment to academic excellence. My dedication to medical education extends to my time at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where I earned competitive scholarships while completing a Certificate in Business Management. I've honed my skills as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Atlanta Center for Medical Research, managing multiple clinical trials with precision. Additionally, as a co-founder of the Elpis Mental Health and Research Initiative, I've actively worked to combat mental health stigma through innovative approaches in Nigeria. Currently engaged in cutting-edge research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, I focus on clinical outcomes in spine and orthopedic surgery. My dedication to advancing medical knowledge is underscored by my extensive publication record, with three articles featured in highly-ranked journals. l have been mentoring and coaching students in the undergraduate, medical, and medical residency application process for over 25 years. My clients have been accepted to outstanding schools such as Harvard College, Harvard Medical School, Stanford University School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, Stanford Neurosurgery Residency, and Yale Internal Medicine Residency. All of the medical school applicants I have worked with have received multiple interviews at the very top programs. I hold a PhD in English and American Literature (with a writing emphasis) (1982) and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (1986). I taught introductory and advanced writing at the University of Massachusetts for many years and also worked for over five years as a consultant/writer/editor at Arthur D. Little, a large Boston based consulting firm. In addition to my mentorship work and work as a writer, I am a Clinical Psychologist and have been working with young adult clients for some thirty years. While I am passionate about my clinical work, I honestly enjoy applying my skillset toward working through the essay writing and application process with those applying to college and medical school. This process requires some self reflection in order to create a convincing narrative, and I love guiding my clients through this process. My goals is always to help create the most convincing and well written essays-- essays that perfectly support the student’s application. In addition to helping clients with the essay components of the application process, I also have great insight into the "tricks" of structuring and presenting the activity section of the medical school application--so that you ultimately create a cohesive and convincing picture of what you have accomplished, who you are, and how you stand out.

Gaining admission to medical school can be incredibly challenging. Prior to Leland, I have worked closely with several medical school applicants who have each gained admission to stellar programs. My philosophy is to spend time up front getting to understand your background, motivations for pursuing medicine, and aspirations for your medical career. From there, we can work to craft an application that communicates your story in a manner that will impress admissions committees while staying true to yourself.

As someone who is first generation, both as an immigrant and a college student, I know firsthand the challenge of applying to higher education. I remember feeling adrift during the process, unsure of how to best structure my applications and highlight my strengths. I successfully taught myself how to navigate these systems. Additionally, I went on to become a student member of my medical school's admissions committee; I saw first-hand what made an applicant stand out and what were considered potential red flags. This experience, combined with my self-taught knowledge as a first-gen student, means I am best qualified to help you on your journey through higher education.
