While I was preparing for my university applications, I recognized that one of the most important components of the application is the essay and having a hook in extracurricular activities. It's not the GPA/SAT score like many believe (which in actuality is only a checkbox for the admissions committee). I was able to fully understand how the admissions committee evaluates an application after reading my Stanford application and the admission committee comments on there. Beyond the basics of the application from helping with SAT prep and extracurricular planning, I will focus my time on being able to translate your extracurricular activities into a meaningful essay and supplementals.

I have spent over a decade working in higher education and admissions, including as an Associate Director of Admission at the University of Southern California, where I reviewed thousands of applications, and worked closely with families during pivotal moments of transition. Even while working in admissions, my role often extended beyond applications, offering empathetic guidance through uncertainty, self-doubt, and major academic and personal decisions. I believe the strongest applications are created through strategy, self-trust, and authentic storytelling. I have extensive experience in writing and education, and therefore bring a unique perspective to college admissions coaching. As a current Fulbright Scholar, I have spent significant time crafting application essays for fellowships, and learning how to make these essays competitive. My time in Taiwan through Fulbright has also taught me to work on English writing with people from a wide range of backgrounds including internationally. As former Presidential Writer at The White House, I honed my skills in crafting precise and impactful narratives on extremely tight deadlines in a high pressure environment. My work as a tutor at SpiderSmart learning centers has equipped me with the tools to guide high schoolers through the intricacies of the application process, making sure that they put their stories, and their best foot forward. Additionally, my leadership roles in political campaigns have helped hone my ability to mentor and manage, which I apply to support students in achieving their academic goals. As a graduate of the University of Chicago, I also bring my own experience navigating the competitive college admissions process. Hi, I’m Ashley! I am based in New York City where I currently work in admissions at Teachers College, Columbia University. I was first drawn to the field of admissions during my time as a student at the University of Virginia. As a Senior Resident and an Admission Ambassador at UVA, I had the opportunity to closely guide hundreds of students in navigating their first year of college, and I found these experiences to be incredibly rewarding. Since then, I have happily developed my admissions career at TC for the past 11 years, including earning a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education along the way! At Teachers College, I am a Senior Associate Director of Admission, liaising with the Counseling and Clinical Psychology Department as well as leading our virtual recruitment initiatives. I find so much joy in connecting with our prospective students to help them understand how their interests and strengths may translate into an exceptional application. On the other side of the process, I regularly feel inspired while reviewing the applications of these vibrant students, who often desire to make a beneficial impact on society. Outside of Teachers College, I spent a year working with a private college counseling company where I counseled and mentored high school students through the entire undergraduate admission process. In this role, I assisted students in researching institutions of interest, creating a balanced school list aligned with their academic goals, gathering and crafting required application materials for each school, and submitting polished materials. My students were successfully admitted into wonderful schools such as Tufts, Georgia Tech, New York University, Georgetown, and UC Berkeley, just to name a few!
