Ashley not only embodies this definition of an ideal coach, but elevates it by being the extraordinary human being she is. Ashley was my program liaison at Teachers College, Columbia University, and she went above and beyond to answer my questions even before I joined the program (that is, even before her role as my liaison officially began!). We’ve all been in situations where we didn’t know what we didn’t know, where blind spots in our understanding kept us from even knowing what questions to ask. A good coach recognizes those blind spots and provides that information upfront. To this day, I’m amazed at how Ashley anticipated my gaps in knowledge about higher education and proactively shared insights that helped me make more informed decisions—that’s the power of her experience. She doesn’t just look out for you once she knows you personally; she genuinely wants to set everyone up for success. Ashley’s support continued well after I enrolled at Teachers College. She regularly shared opportunities with me—even when I hadn’t expected her to remember me at all! Ashley has the unique gift of keeping her students and mentees in mind, and she advocates for them in rooms full of opportunities. If you ever get an unexpected email from her with a resource connected to something you once casually mentioned, know that’s Ashley’s way of investing in your future.
