About Ashley
Hi, I’m Ashley! I am based in New York City where I currently work in admissions at Teachers College, Columbia University. I'm so glad you are here, and would love to tell you a little bit more about myself below! I was first drawn to the field of higher education during my undergraduate years at the University of Virginia, where I had the opportunity to closely guide hundreds of students as they navigated their first year of college. As a Senior Resident and an Admission Ambassador, I was able to connect students to impactful campus resources as well as support them through various opportunities and challenges, and I personally found these experiences to be incredibly rewarding. Since then, I have happily developed my admissions career at TC over the past 11 years, and I even earned a Master of Arts degree in Higher & Postsecondary Education along the way! At Teachers College, I am a Senior Associate Director of Admission, liaising with the Counseling and Clinical Psychology Department as well as leading our virtual recruitment initiatives. I find so much joy in connecting with our prospective students to help them understand how their interests and strengths may translate into an exceptional application. On the other side of the process, I regularly feel inspired while reviewing the applications of these vibrant students, who often desire to make a beneficial impact on society. While it is a privilege for me to help shape a new cohort of dynamic students, I feel equally honored to assist applicants in discovering their unique voice within the application process. Outside of Teachers College, I spent a year working with a private college counseling company where I counseled and mentored high school students through the entire undergraduate admission process. In this role, I assisted students in researching institutions of interest, creating a balanced school list aligned with their academic goals, gathering and crafting required application materials for each school, and submitting polished materials. My students were successfully admitted into wonderful schools such as Tufts, Georgia Tech, New York University, Georgetown, and UC Berkeley, just to name a few! I look forward to taking a thoughtful, meticulous, and tailored approach when working with you, ensuring that we are carving out a personalized path that resonates with your unique interests and goals. When I'm not counseling students, I can be found reading, writing children’s stories, recording voiceover cartoons, performing in a musical, and scouting out the best mac n' cheese in New York City. I am so excited to support you in your journey towards finding your future college!
Why do I coach?
When you think of the college application process, do you feel anxious or intimidated? Maybe even overwhelmed when trying to figure out where to begin? I completely understand! I very clearly remember the days of staying up until 3 a.m. editing my college essays—staring at the screen, second-guessing every word, wondering if I was being too serious or too funny or too unique or too boring. (And let me tell you, a LOT of double stuffed oreos were consumed during that time!) But what if there was a way to turn this scary process around, and make it feel approachable, manageable, and possibly even a little bit fun? I coach for this very reason. My goal is to support you in whatever capacity you need as a college applicant, whether it's brainstorming essay topics, creating a timeline to keep track of important deadlines, securing effective recommendation letters, refining your personal statement, or strategizing how to best showcase your experiences and skills. But beyond providing you with my professional advice and insight, I wholeheartedly would love to change this experience for you. My goal is to help you feel empowered and excited to craft your unique application materials, rather than feel daunted by the process. Please don't hesitate to schedule a free consultation with me, so I can get to know you better and understand how I can best support you as you navigate through your college application process. I would feel honored to be a part of your college journey!
Work Experience
Senior Associate Director of Admission
Teachers College - Columbia University
June 2023 - Present
Admissions Committee
As a Senior Associate Director of Admission, I oversee the admission processes for multiple Masters and Doctoral programs. This includes helping to design effective admission rubrics, training a team of reviewers, and participating in committee review. Additionally, I lead virtual recruitment initiatives for the Office of Admission, creating and executing a high-level recruitment plan for all online opportunities. I meet directly with prospective and admitted students in one-on-one appointments, helping to guide them through the admission and enrollment process and navigate any challenges they may have. I also lead the hiring process for specific positions in my office, and I participate in other hiring and interview processes across the college as well.
Associate Director of Admission
Teachers College - Columbia University
June 2020 - June 2023
Hiring Manager
In this role, I continued to develop and cultivate relationships with students to encourage application submission and enrollment specifically for two academic departments, and I trained readers to review applications for those programs as well. I also led off-campus recruitment initiatives for the Office of Admission. I became a Hiring Manager for specific open roles in my office, including both professional full time positions and student employee positions. I coordinated the hiring process from start to finish, from reviewing applications, to selecting candidates for interviews, to selecting my interview committee members, to deciding the final candidate based on collective feedback.
Assistant Director of Admission
Teachers College - Columbia University
September 2015 - June 2020
Interviewer
In this role, I had the opportunity to provide daily one-on-one appointments with prospective, admitted, and current students to offer mentorship and share clear information regarding details of programs, the application process and next steps for enrollment. I also collaborated closely with faculty to coordinate admission timelines and develop best practices for review and enrollment processes for applicants to their programs. When hiring for open positions in our office and other key offices on campus, I took part in the interview process by joining 3-5 person panels to select candidates for these roles.
