Carl has taught, literally, thousands of students to succeed on the GMAT, and thousands more the ACT, SAT, GRE, and LSAT, over a career spanning over two decades in the test preparation world. Originally an academic, he holds advanced degrees from Yale, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Georgia, and since leaving academia he has taught, tutored, and written content for Magoosh, Kaplan, Harvard Prep, SuccessPrep, Parliament Tutors, Varsity Tutors, and many other companies, and has since founded his own company, Ivory Tower Tutoring. He was also, for many years, the chief writer for Barron''s GMAT product line.

I spent a VERY long time studying the GMAT only to come up very short on GMAT math. Twice. Then I spent weeks doing nothing but studying those who ACED the exam, with an emphasis on those who did so after having middling scores. The result was a big change in my study and practice process. And I went from 54th percentile math scores TWICE after lots and lots of study, to getting the effective high score on the GMAT Math after only a couple months of study with my new process. I will show you exactly how I did it so you have the same framework and standards I had.

My one-on-one coaching for GMAT Focus preparation covers all tested sections: Verbal, Quantitative, and Data Insights. I follow a practical, results-oriented methodology, focusing on core concepts, exam-specific strategies, and efficient execution techniques required to achieve a competitive score. Sessions include a detailed explanation of formulas, exam vocabulary, mathematical terminology, and structured approaches to time management. Based on my coaching experience, candidates starting from zero typically require 30–40 hours of instruction to cover the full scope of the exam in a thorough and effective manner.

I scored a 755 (100th percentile) on the GMAT Focus Edition, with a V90, and tutor across all three sections, though I have the most experience with Verbal and DI. I like to think of the GMAT as a test of decision-making under time pressure, not raw intelligence. My emphasis is on question-solving strategies — how to read efficiently, eliminate decisively, and manage time without rushing or freezing. I’m very hands-on and adapt my approach to how you think, whether that means simplifying complex ideas, fixing timing issues, or helping you gain confidence where you’ve been second-guessing yourself.
