I recently completed the OT application process and will be starting a master’s degree and post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy at Columbia University this fall. I independently handled every step, from researching programs and preparing application materials to interviews, prerequisites, and financial aid, and I’ve spent extensive time shadowing occupational therapists across diverse settings. I turned my own skill with graduate-school applications--including admission to the US's top clinical psychology Master's/PhD program--into a way to help other applicants succeed. I do that by helping them find the right stories to tell and put their best foot forward, using my experience/success not only with applications but with writing fiction, narrative non-fiction, screenplays, and other story-driven work. I have extensive experience with crafting personal statements, securing letters of recommendation, preparing for behavioral interviews, and general application strategy. My north star from teen years was to study in the US. This pushed me to start my application process early - from shortlisting programs and identifying the best fit to maximizing my GRE score and speaking with students and faculty at my target schools, I was able to methodically manage every component of my application. I am also of the opinion that one should aim for the wildest dreams and take a swing. Therefore, I always tell my clients, friends, and peers to separate the signal from the noise and apply to the schools that they really wish to attend, and at the same time, I help them build plans B, C, and D. It's good to have backup plans and yet it is equally important to give every application your absolute best so that there's no room for regret.
