Why do I coach?
Why am I so passionate about coaching? Because years ago, I had one of the worst bosses you could imagine. His name was Svenn—head of Cruise Operations. Old-school, ex-Chief Engineer. Imagine a Viking warlord, cold as the Arctic winter. Instead of a battle axe, he wielded a calculator and his power as number three in the company. The problem? He had never wanted me in my role as Head of Casino Operations. And once the org chart changed, he finally had the power to act. He called me into his office one day, handed me a heavily redacted casino revenue report from another cruise line and growled, “Yonatan, you will make these numbers—or you’re out by the end of the year. And no bonus for you.” I said, “Excuse me, what? What do these numbers even mean? How many passengers? What length of cruise?” He cut me off cold: “I don’t care what you have to say. You can leave my office now.” I walked out stunned. My heart sank. Anxiety kicked in. I couldn’t sleep. Couldn’t eat. I was miserable. Back then, HR was a joke. The company lawyer looked at me, shook his head, and said: “Svenn? Boy, are you screwed.” And I made a decision I still regret—I resigned. It’s said that people don’t quit companies, they quit bad bosses. And Svenn made me feel completely undervalued, powerless, and alone. That experience shaped everything for me. When I chose to become a leadership trainer and coach, I made it my mission to help leaders like you— —and the people you lead—build teams where people feel trusted, respected, and supported.
