Description

Your personal statement is your opportunity to show an admissions committee who you are beyond your numbers and credentials. The strongest statements tell a meaningful, authentic story that gives the reader insight into who you are, what has shaped you, why law school makes sense for you, and what you will bring to the legal profession. I'll help you identify the experiences, ideas, and stories that can form the foundation of a compelling personal statement. We'll develop a clear narrative strategy and then refine your writing through detailed substantive and editorial feedback. Drawing on my experience as a lawyer, former law school career services professional, career coach, and professional writer and editor, I'll help you create a personal statement that is thoughtful, persuasive, polished, and most importantly, authentic. Here's how we'll work together: 1. Session 1: Personal Statement Strategy & Story Development We'll begin with a focused strategy session (60-minutes) designed to uncover the experiences, perspectives, motivations, and stories that could form the foundation of your personal statement. Prior to this session, you’ll need to share your resume, any existing statement draft, and complete an intake questionnaire I provide. Together, we'll identify the strongest direction for your statement and develop a strategy for telling that story effectively. We'll explore questions such as: * What experiences have shaped who you are? * Why does law school make sense as your next step? * What do you want an admissions committee to understand about you that they won't learn from your résumé or academic record? * What qualities, values, or perspectives do you want your statement to communicate? 2. Narrative Development & Outline (Offline work by me) Following our strategy session, I'll work offline to develop your narrative and create a detailed outline for your personal statement. The goal is to establish a strong foundation before you begin (or continue) drafting, including the central theme, narrative arc, key experiences, and overall structure. I provide the outline you need to draft your statement, and you’ll prepare a first draft of your statement. 3. Session 2: Draft Review & Substantive Feedback Once you've completed your draft, we'll meet for a second session (30 to 60 minutes) to discuss the statement in depth. We'll identify the changes that will make the statement more compelling while preserving your authentic voice. I'll provide detailed feedback on: * Overall narrative and structure * Strength and relevance of the central story * Authenticity and voice * Clarity and organization * Connection between your experiences and your decision to pursue law * What the statement communicates about you as a future law student and lawyer * Areas that may be unclear, underdeveloped, repetitive, or distracting 4. Post Session Editing (Offline work) After our second session, I'll provide detailed feedback and editing on your statement. I will focus on strengthening the narrative, sharpening the writing, improving flow and clarity, and ensuring that every part of the statement is serving its purpose. I’ll then send you my revisions prior to our third and final session. 5. Session 3: Final Review and Revision Session We’ll meet for 30 minutes to discuss revisions and finalize your statement. At the conclusion of the process, you'll have a polished, submission-ready personal statement that communicates your story clearly, authentically, and persuasively. This package is ideal for applicants who: * Don't know what to write about in their personal statement * Have several possible stories but aren't sure which one is strongest * Have started drafting but aren't confident in their topic or approach * Are struggling to turn an important experience into a compelling narrative * Want their statement to communicate something meaningful beyond their résumé and credentials * Want an experienced professional to provide both strategic guidance and sophisticated editorial feedback * Want to make sure their statement sounds authentic and distinctive rather than generic or overly polished
