About Emilio

Hi there — I'm an independent AI safety researcher examining how emerging technologies reshape human decision-making, organizational practices, and society at large. My work focuses on human–AI interaction, language model behavior, and technology adoption patterns. I hold an MA in Media Studies/Sociology from Columbia University, where I also developed expertise in qualitative research methods and sociotechnical systems. My academic journey began at BYU–Hawaii, where early mentorship transformed my trajectory entirely. Those experiences taught me something crucial: with strategic effort, informed guidance, and willingness to take calculated risks, you can achieve outcomes that initially seem out of reach. When I pivoted into graduate study, I spent months crafting a cohesive narrative and executing a focused application strategy—ultimately earning acceptances from Columbia and NYU. I coach because I've watched talented people underestimate how close they are to breakthrough moments. I work with clients on graduate school applications, career pivots, long-term planning, networking strategy, and interview preparation. I also help people understand how AI is reshaping expertise and work—giving you a grounded perspective on navigating these shifts strategically. My approach combines research-driven insight with practical execution and narrative craft. Above all, I help clients recognize their own potential and take deliberate steps toward the futures they want.

Why do I coach?

I coach because transformative guidance changed my life—and I believe everyone deserves access to that kind of support. Early in my undergrad, a mentor pushed me to take bigger risks and aim higher than I thought possible. That single relationship reshaped my entire approach to growth and opportunity. It gave me permission to pursue ambitious goals and the resilience to navigate inevitable setbacks. Since then, I've deliberately cultivated a network of mentors who continue challenging me to expand what I think is achievable. Now I want to provide that same catalyst for others. The right guidance doesn't just help you refine a résumé or ace an interview—it fundamentally shifts how you see your own possibilities. Whether you're navigating self-doubt, planning a major pivot, or preparing for a competitive process, strategic support makes the difference between incremental progress and genuine transformation.

As a Claude Campus Ambassador for Anthropic, I promote awareness and adoption of Claude AI across Columbia’s 33,000-student community through targeted outreach campaigns, educational workshops, and collaborations with student organizations. I also serve as a liaison between Anthropic and the university, gathering user feedback from students and delivering quarterly reports to inform improvements in Claude’s educational applications.

January 2025 - Present

I manage AI safety research within the Columbia AI Alignment Club, supporting multiple projects through design, execution, and impact planning while offering detailed feedback on papers and experimental methods. My work includes adapting classic social science experiments (e.g., truth-bias, escalation of commitment) to study human-like behaviors in language models. I also lead a seven-week seminar on AI governance and social impact, mentoring 25 undergraduate fellows as they develop research proposals.

June 2025 - August 2025

I worked as a Summer Research Intern in the Management Division at Columbia Business School (acceptance rate <5%), collaborating with Professor Alan Zhang on a project examining how emerging player-performance technologies are adopted in amateur competitive youth sports. I conducted semi-structured interviews and ethnographic field observations with athletes and coaches, and produced a comprehensive literature review on technology adoption, data-driven performance evaluation, and innovation diffusion in sports.
