Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in all sectors of the economy and empowering a sustainable future. The company’s Sunlight Refinery aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, and hydrogen fuels at scale for the first time in history. Heliogen was created at Idealab, the leading technology incubator founded by Bill Gross in 1996. For more information about Heliogen, please visit heliogen.com. In this role, I was involved throughout Heliogen to work on pressing priority simulation and integration activities.

Director, Simulation & Modeling

Heliogen

February 2020 - August 2022

Hiring Manager

In this role at Heliogen, I directed the development and deployment of internal and external simulation tools for engineering and business development needs, such as: - system design and performance for incoming and current customers, - solar field design for novel receiver testing with site-specific derived hardware requirements, - mathematical modeling of novel hardware kinematics, - large-scale plant-level optimization, and - interfacing with industry product classification for software modeling techniques and resulting hardware performance estimates. In February of 2020 the org had just one report. In two and a half years we grew beyond 10x, comprising a Plant Simulation Team and a Model Integration Team. That remained intact for another six months to advance simulation & modeling activities throughout Heliogen until a major company restructuring that time.

I product managed our ray-tracing software packages, as well as provided simulation analyses and recommendations internally and externally. I also operated and develop our financial models in support of active Business Development efforts. I was proudly the liaison for a Harvey Mudd Clinic team of 6 working on a wind instrumentation rig and sensor package for eSolar heliostats in our fields, excited to have provided an engaging opportunity for bright students to help us solve real problems. Primarily, I designed and verified for compatibility the heliostat field layout and resulting flux distribution at the Sundrop Farms Port Augusta Expansion, a 20ha sea-water greenhouse using 23712 heliostats to collect sunlight, heat water, and thus provide thermal power for on-site desalination and thermal regulation of 30 million pounds of truss tomatoes annually--15% of the Australian tomato market as made possible by a 10-year tomato purchase agreement between Sundrop Farms and Coles.

I continued to develop and maintain our ray-tracing software, as well as provided support on its use for our external customers. I also carried out and led trade studies and optimizations using the software to answer questions for our internal and external projects, as well as furthered product development. Organizationally, I also led the Recruiting Tiger Team for our Mechanical, Electrical, Analysis, Test, and Systems Engineering positions and contributed to our business process development and maintenance on a regular basis.

Interviewer

I started at eSolar doing Simulation & Modeling work for the Systems Engineering Team. I developed and maintained the in-house ray-tracing software packages that we used to predict and validate the performance of our Solar Collector System. I also facilitated the use of this software in carrying out trade studies and optimizations through my own use as well as educational exercises and training sessions within the company.
