I have earned a master's degree in school counseling (secondary track) which led to my school counseling certification. As a high school counselor, my primary role was to assist students in preparing for college and career. I helped students through all steps of the college process, including selecting a major, selecting schools to apply to, planning high school couses, planning extracurricular activities, writing recommendation letters, assisting with standardized test prep, and helping fill out college applications/financial aid applications. I worked at two very different high schools during my master's program. The first school I worked at was a top 10 public school in the county, and I assisted many students plan their high school experience to be competitive for ivy league colleges. The second school I worked at was a Title 1 school, where I was helping most students learn what the college application process was like, with the goal of admission and scholarships to at least one college. Additionally, my personal experience as a first generation student who earned a full ride scholarship to Vanderbilt taught me a lot about the college admission process.

About Joseph
I have always highly valued education and learning. I studied hard in high school, which led to earning a scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University. As a first generation college student, I was not aware of the goals I should be working towards in college. I didn't choose the best major for my career goals, and I didn't do any internships or meaningful extracurricular activities. When I graduated from college during COVID-19, I wasn't able to find a job I was happy with. The frustration I felt led me to wonder what makes some college students successful in college, while others fall behind. The answer I landed on was access to information. So, I went to graduate school, earned my school counseling certification, and started working at career centers. Through my job, I am able to provide high school students, college students, and alumni with career knowledge that I wish I had when I was in their position. I love the work I do, and I believe that providing access to information is a leading factor in social mobility.
Why do I coach?
I coach because I want to help people get to a better standing in life. I believe a good conversation with a career counselor can change the trajectory of someone's life, by providing them access to quality job opportunities. I aim to increase social mobility for high school students, college students, and early career professionals who are navigating a tumultuous post-covid workforce.
