A few years ago, I was a high school student in Bucharest, Romania, with no college counselor, no alumni network, and no roadmap — just a big goal. I taught myself how US admissions work, built my application from scratch, and got into every single school I applied to: Stanford, UC Berkeley M.E.T. (the EECS + Haas dual-degree program), UCLA, and Rice. Today I'm studying Artificial Intelligence and Aerospace Engineering at Stanford. What got me in wasn't perfect stats — it was a profile no admissions officer had seen before. In high school, I co-founded ROM, the first spacecraft development team in Romania, and led us to launching our country's first functional satellites on SpaceX rockets (ROM-2 & ROM-3) — a story covered by the national press. Along the way, I was recruited to work with Airbus on an ESA tender for modular space-mission batteries, led research on morphing aircraft wings, and interned in RF engineering at Tarana Wireless in Silicon Valley. That journey taught me the real playbook of selective admissions: you don't win by checking boxes — you win by building a spiky, authentic profile and telling your story so clearly that the reader can't forget you.
