About Tanner

If you're reading this, you're probably ambitious, doing well on paper, and still wondering whether you're in the right seat or whether anyone sees what you're actually capable of. I know that feeling well. I grew up in a small Indiana farm town and then attended Indiana University's Kelley School of Business on a full-ride scholarship. After undergrad, I joined McKinsey in Chicago, where I performed well yet still spent most of my first year quietly wondering whether I belonged. I had good people around me. I just hadn't learned to trust their read on me over my own. That shifted when I was selected as Deputy Chief of Staff to McKinsey's Global Managing Partner. From there I became Chief of Staff to the CEO of an a16z-backed aerospace technology startup, then joined a $350M farmland investment firm as Chief of Staff, a role that grew into my current position as VP of Investment Strategy, where I lead strategy, business development, and investor relations. I coach across the moments where careers actually get decided: stepping into or leveling up in a Chief of Staff role, running a transition or search with a real plan instead of a hope, and figuring out how to be seen, heard, and trusted at the level you're operating at now. Some clients come with a specific target in mind. Others just know the current path isn't the right one anymore. I'm confident you already have the talent. My job is to help you use it sooner, with a lot less second-guessing.

Why do I coach?

For most of my career, the thing slowing me down wasn't ability. It was self-doubt, and not always feeling like I fit. I had mentors and people who believed in me. What I didn't have early on was someone who had walked the specific path I was on and could tell me plainly: this is normal, here's what actually matters, here's what to do next. So I overthought decisions, spent energy on the wrong worries, and waited to feel ready before raising my hand. The moments that most changed my trajectory were the ones where someone finally gave me that clarity, usually in about ten minutes. That's the work. Most people I coach are already talented and already performing. They don't need motivation. They need a plan, a candid outside read, and someone who has sat on both sides of the table for the roles and decisions in front of them. I've been doing this informally for more than ten years and professionally for 2-3, and I've watched people land the role, get the promotion, and stop hedging. I don't take credit for their wins. But helping someone get out of their own way and achieve their next goal is easily the most satisfying work I do.
