About Susan
After working in consulting for a few years, I went to business school to retook and redirect my career. I went in thinking that I wanted to go into operations but after taking a marketing class, I realized that I could build on my computer science background and help develop technology products that would make work more efficient. I had no interest in creating a product line extension for soap or repackaging a food product. Long before becoming a product manager in technology was a 'thing,' I was doing it. First at an established company, then at a firm that went public during my time there and finally as one of the first 10 employees at an angel-funded start-up. After taking a break to focus on family, I re-entered the work force reading applications at Duke. I loved reading about applicants' interests, passions and motivations but never truly got to know them and often thought that they were communicating a story that they THOUGHT I wanted to read. For over 11 years I've been supporting MBA applicants, digging into their past experiences, exploring potential career paths, identifying what makes them special, finding the best schools to help them achieve their goals.
Why do I coach?
I coach because my high school track coach believed in me before I had confidence in myself. I want to give that same gift to those navigating professional transitions. After spending 10 years reading applications at Duke's Fuqua School of Business, I realized that many applicants were likely stronger than what they presented in their applications. For that reason, I joined Stratus where I spent 11 years helping young professionals navigate the often opaque MBA application process. I love getting to know my clients and helping them to uncover what makes them truly unique so they can present a compelling narrative in their applications.
