About Stephen
Hello, I'm Stephen (or Steve, either one!). I grew up in New Jersey in a large family (I am 6 of 7!) and upon graduating went off to Lehigh University where I got my accounting degree. After Lehigh, I was hired by KPMG and earned my CPA designation. After about 2 years, I headed back to school to get my MBA at Cornell to kick-start a career on Wall Street. I worked for both bulge bracket and middle-market firms throughout my career, with extensive M&A experience across a wide range of industries, led the Financial Sponsor group and led the recruiting/staffing efforts at my last several positions. After 20+ years, I decided to step away from front line investment banking and pivot to spending my time coaching / mentoring / training aspiring students, career changers, and current junior to mid-level bankers asking for career advice. See my “Why I coach” section below, which includes my approach to coaching. I love fishing, golfing, movies and music of all kinds, boxing, and don’t bounce me for this but I am a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan! I look forward to meeting you!
Why do I coach?
I led the recruiting efforts, training and was staffer for the past 15 years in addition to running M&A deals.. Many of my co-workers viewed that responsibility as a bother - for me, it was one of the most rewarding parts of the job! I get tremendous gratification in mentoring and coaching those trying to get into the industry as well current bankers, accountants, valuation experts, etc. looking for career advice. I take a very personal and hands-on approach when coaching/mentoring. First, I really like to get to know the client, both personally and professionally. I also make sure I get to know your goals, career aspirations, strengths and weaknesses. This all helps me give more personalized and helpful advice. I am honest, so I will tell you where I see there are weaknesses and then make a plan to address those areas. I keep in touch, follow-up to determine if there is anything else I can help with and even check in after our time together has ended. I get truly invested and excited about helping you succeed. I can help in a wide variety of situations including students pursuing a career in investment banking, private equity, financial advisory services / accounting, and corporate finance. I also can be of help to existing junior to mid-level bankers who are preparing for lateral moves or looking to change careers. If you are interested in any of the following, I would love to speak! 1) Interview prep (building your story, behavioral and technical questions) 2) Career paths, planning and advice 3) Technical training sessions (valuation, financial statement analysis, deal process, market discussions, M&A and equity market discussion, etc.) 4) Thinking through different career paths within investment banking, accounting and corporate finance. 5) Help devise a strategy for landing investment banking positions for students, particularly those from non-core schools or career changers. (Students - you need to start early! Ideally you start preparing your freshman year, many banks finish their hiring for Junior year internships before your sophomore year ends 6) Networking planning and assistance 7) What makes a good junior or mid-level banker? Not necessarily the ones you are aware of: modeling, valuation skills, hard working, communication. I will take you through specific smaller tasks, attitude, what not to do, what are your critical responsibilities that cannot be overlooked, what NOT to say and do. 8) Anything else you think I could be helpful with! If this all sounds like I can be of help to you and your career goals - lets set up an intro call!
