About Shahrukh
In 2014, I joined McKinsey's newly opened Pakistan office as one of the first four hires, which gave me the rare privilege of helping a global institution put down roots in my own country. I went on to lead recruiting for the office and watched it grow from 4 people to 50 by the time I left in 2019. During my five years with McKinsey in the region, my passion for recruiting and talent development, backed by strong results, led me to become a top interview coach for candidates applying to McKinsey's offices in Pakistan and the Middle East. In 2019, I left McKinsey to pursue my MBA at Harvard Business School, becoming the first consultant from McKinsey's Pakistan office to do so. Since then, I've coached and inspired hundreds of aspiring MBA candidates from developing countries to get into top business schools worldwide, through 1:1 coaching, webinars, and admissions guides. In 2021, after graduating, I rejoined McKinsey, this time at its Detroit office, for three years, to help rewrite the growth story of the original car capital. I joined the recruiting team again, this time as an interview coach and interviewer, and helped the office 2x its Business Analyst/Associate class during my time there. I'm now based in Silicon Valley, helping the original Silicon Valley garage startup, HP Inc., rewrite its growth story in the exciting age of AI.
Why do I coach?
My personal bio above is, understandably, curated to show the highlights of my journey. But my passion for coaching is rooted in the scars I earned writing that story. I've never been the smartest person in the room, and definitely not the most privileged, but I'm almost always the most battle-hardened. Not being born into privilege, I had to learn and apply both the written and unwritten rules, mostly through perseverance and a little serendipity, to get into elite institutions like McKinsey and HBS. Getting into McKinsey, for instance, was not straightforward. I was invited to interview with McKinsey Dubai for a summer internship in my junior year. Thinking that practising 10-12 cases would be enough, I went in and bombed it. That rejection propelled me to dedicate my senior year to preparing for McKinsey, and I ended up practising 100+ cases with kind souls across the globe. The experience transformed me. By the time the offer came, I was already thinking and acting like a McKinsey consultant, and I like to think I summoned it into being. Getting into HBS, similarly, was not straightforward. For years, I chased the so-called written rule that you need a 700+ GMAT score to stand a chance. Despite four attempts, I never crossed 700, and yet I got into HBS by learning and applying several unwritten rules instead. While the journey got frustrating at times, it's exactly that journey that now moves me to share my experience, instincts, and lessons with others walking a similar path. My hope is that I can help you read the written rules more holistically and pick up the unwritten ones faster, so you're wiser than I was at your stage, and reach your goals sooner than I did.
