20+ people coached for AI Strategy & Transformation

I have been a founder, advisor, and educator at the highest levels – and AI is now central to everything I teach and do. At Duke, I run a recurring workshop ("How you can (and should!) build your MVP") teaching founders and operators how to build products using no-code and AI tools. I advise student founders and MBA operators on how to integrate AI into their workflows, products, and go-to-market strategies. Before Duke, I built and sold a SaaS company – and today I use AI tools daily in my own consulting and teaching practice. I understand what's actually possible for non-technical founders and operators right now, and I help people move from AI-curious to AI-native as fast as possible.

About Max

Hi, I'm Max Stern! It's nice to meet. I'm a Lecturer at Duke University, where I teach courses for student founders and work 1:1 with 125+ entrepreneurs across all stages and industries. I also support programs for founders (like Duke's accelerator, Melissa & Doug Entrepreneurs), and in 2024, my co-led course was recognized as "The Favorite Course of MBAs" by Poets&Quants. Before teaching, I was a founder. I built Closure, a funeral industry software company, and bootstrapped it to 25 employees and a $48MM exit after 5 years. I also launched a series of service-based businesses (ghostwriting, ESG auditing, chef-services and more) (backed by YC, Techstars, and misc. angels) through a venture-studio model. What makes my coaching different: – I know the pain of building something important and have seen/lived through every challenge imaginable. I've also made every mistake you can think of and can help you learn faster. – I bring perspectives from real builders (my experiences building and advising currently-operating founders) and leading educators (the latest insights from my colleagues at Fuqua, Duke's Business School). – You get frameworks that actually work in practice. – You get insights from my relationships across the venture ecosystem and will know what investors want to see. Who I work with: – First-time founders who "have an idea, but don't know what to do next." – Early-stage founders (pre-seed to seed, <$10MM raised) on pitch narrative, GTM strategy, and fundraising mechanics – AI-native founders on positioning, moat, and what people actually care about beyond "we use LLMs" – "Aspiring Entrepreneurs" (MBAs, operators) who want a defined path to "doing their own thing."

Why do I coach?

I was a solo founder and thought I had to "do it all myself." It was lonely, expensive and I'm still working through some of the scars. Now, I help founders avoid the pitfalls I faced, get clarity on what to do next, and move forward faster. I absolutely love teaching at Duke, and am on Leland to expand my impact "beyond Duke" – I'm bringing the same quality of coaching/instruction that my students get to founders, operators, and aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.

Teach MBA, graduate, and undergraduate courses through the Department of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. → I design and teach the New Ventures courses at Duke – a series of team-based, experiential courses operating as "mini-accelerators" for Duke's most promising founders. Courses taught: NEW VENTURES DISCOVER: For students with idea-stage startups, this course emphasizes prototyping and the execution of a sound customer discovery process. Taught as independent courses for Fuqua MBA students (STRATEGY 848) and Graduate School students (I&E 748). NEW VENTURES DEVELOP: For students with validation-stage startups, this course emphasizes monetization and the development of a sustainable business model. 2023 - Present

Support all I&E programs/events, host workshops, run student-centric initiatives, and co-led the 2025 Melissa & Doug Entrepreneurs program. → I support all I&E initiatives, which typically looks like a combination of: supporting faculty members (representing the department at expos and events), supporting student founders (preparing slide decks and presentations), and supporting alumni/board visitors (facilitating networking and engagement events). → I host a technical workshop on no-code/low-code/AI-assisted product development, "How you can (and should!) build your MVP," for university students, faculty, and staff each semester. → I created and run a Startup Showcase Follow-up Initiative, providing direct pitch feedback to student founders via 40+ follow-up virtual meetings (I am extremely proud of this impact!). → I operated as Assistant Director of Melissa & Doug Entrepreneurs 2025 (under Amy Linnane) and helped lead the program. My role was to design the program curriculum, provide one-on-one guidance to each student entrepreneur, and ensure the success and alignment of the overall cohort with respect to key stakeholders – 2025 outcomes include two company exits.
