About Matt
I’m an introvert who would usually choose one meaningful conversation over working a room full of people. That preference has shaped both my life and the way I coach. My career has taken several unexpected turns. I began in accounting and spent more than a decade at Deloitte, eventually becoming an Audit Senior Manager. I later joined eBay, where I worked in SEC reporting, finance, analytics, and investor relations, including international assignments in Germany and Spain. Ultimately, I left a 15-year accounting and finance career to lead eBay’s global leadership-development programs. My life outside large companies has been just as varied. My wife, Gina, and I met in college and later owned a franchise bakery in downtown Denver. I also co-founded a software startup through its initial-revenue stage. I have experienced leadership as an adviser, manager, employee, coach, founder, and business owner. I understand what it feels like when the answer is unclear, the decision is personal, and other people are depending on your judgment. I naturally look for the patterns and assumptions underneath a complicated situation. My coaching is structured, direct, and thoughtful. I help clients separate what is actually happening from the story surrounding it so they can make decisions they understand and can genuinely stand behind.
Why do I coach?
I coach because I know firsthand how much the right coaching conversation can change someone’s life. During eBay’s Finance Leadership Development Program, I worked with a coach for the first time. Early in that relationship, she challenged me to look beyond tasks, accomplishments, or the next career move and begin asking bigger questions about who I was, what mattered to me, and what I wanted my life to mean. Those questions became much more real during an international assignment in Berlin, when my mother died after a long battle with cancer. I was grieving, living overseas, reconsidering what success meant, and beginning to recognize how much of my life had been organized around changing external circumstances rather than understanding my internal experience. As the program ended, I faced a major decision: continue along the accounting and finance path I had followed for 15 years or move into leadership development. Coaching helped me recognize that being good at something did not obligate me to spend the rest of my career doing it. I chose leadership development and enrolled in professional coach training shortly afterward. That experience continues to shape why I coach. Capable people often become stuck not because they lack intelligence or ambition, but because they are operating from assumptions, expectations, or identities they have never stopped to examine. I coach to give people the kind of space I once needed: a place to speak honestly, see their situation more clearly, and make a conscious decision about who they want to be and what they want to do next.
