Joshua’s MBA Qualifications

I got into Columbia Business School off the waitlist with a $100K scholarship. I'm Josh, and as a re-applicant and "non-traditional" candidate who comes from an over-represented demographic background, I understand how confusing and challenging the MBA application process can be. Currently, I'm a rising 2Y at Columbia Business School who is passionate about entrepreneurship and early-stage investing. I work part-time as an early-stage VC investor and hold several leadership positions in both school clubs and non-profit organizations. In my free time, I'm working towards scratch golf and my first Ironman triathlon. Prior to b-school... -> I bootstrapped, crowdfunded, and raised VC for my CPG startup -> Graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in Political Science -> Worked in tech as a Senior Product Manager at Western Digital Corporation -> Freelanced as a consultant for early-stage startups and VC firms Since starting my own MBA journey, I've helped dozens of people start theirs. If you're wondering whether an MBA is worth it, trying to find your voice in the application, or fighting to get off a waitlist — let's talk.

About Joshua
In 2023, I'd just been hit by tech layoffs. A few months later, a routine checkup revealed pre-cancerous growths in my colon. I felt thrown overboard, lost at sea, barely treading water with no bearing. It took nearly a year of soul-searching, awkward coffee chats, and random gigs before I found the courage to reapply for MBA programs. I'm glad I did. The first time around, I'd forced my narrative into traditional career goals, guessing at what adcoms wanted to hear. This time, I embraced the mess instead of editing it out and spoke candidly about the changes I wanted to see in the world, with an MBA as the staging ground for what came next. That’s where my passion for "longevity," and adjacently, self-improvement, was born — out of a long struggle to find meaning and overcome my health scare. Now, as a 2nd year MBA candidate at Columbia, I'm exploring technologies that help people live longer, healthier lives — first as an early-stage investor, before delving into my own entrepreneurial ideas.
Why do I coach?
My own MBA journey wouldn't have been possible without the countless people who let me talk in circles until I found my own thread. People who believed in a version of my story before I could see it myself. I coach because I want to be that person for someone else. But beyond gratitude, I coach because I genuinely love uncovering and crafting a powerful story. I believe everyone has a story worth telling. Most people just haven't been given the space, or the right questions, to find it. I enjoy finding the small details that make an experience specific instead of generic, cutting the parts that sound impressive but say nothing, and finding the thread that ties a scattered set of experiences into a single, honest narrative. That's the real lesson my MBA experience has taught me: it isn't a performance, it's a story. And the version worth telling is usually the one you're most afraid to write down. Helping someone else find theirs is the best part of this work.
