Jonathan’s PhD Programs Qualifications

Jonathan has helped clients get into these schools:

I am a current MD/PhD student in my third year of graduate school at Vanderbilt University studying mechanistic cell signaling in the Ethan Lee laboratory. One of my biggest skillsets in science is communication, which is incredibly important for PhD applications. Science is complex, and being able to simplify your work in a way that others can quickly understand is a daunting task. When done successfully, this makes for the best-written applications and interviews. I have pre-constructed formats on how to approach PhD applications, including describing your previous work. My mentorship skills in this area have proven succesful for numerous aspiring PhD students.

About Jonathan

I am a current MD/PhD student at Vanderbilt University interested in mechanistic cell signaling, pathology, and pediatrics. I have extensive experience in mentoring undergaduate students on their MSTP and PhD applications. As an undergraduate at Vanderbilt, I was awarded the full tuition Ingram Scholars Program scholarship on the basis of community service, graduated with summa cum laude, and received 98th percentile on the MCAT. Passionate for tutoring others, I first began helping students prepare for premedical school courses and the MCAT. As I gained more experience at the Vanderbilt MD/PhD program, I began mentoring students on their medical and graduate school applications.

Why do I coach?

As a child, I was diagnosed with leukemia. During my two-time battle with this disease, I received extensive academic support, including tutoring from local teachers. These tutoring sessions helped me stay on track and achieve my goals of becoming a physician-scientist. Since recovery in 2010, I have strived to give back to others in hopes of providing students the resources and skills they need to reach their aspirations.

Research Assistant

Vanderbilt University

June 2020 - April 2021

Stem cells are undifferentiated and have the capacity to replenish specialized cells. These adaptive cell populations have the potential to treat many diseases, including cancer. Therefore, when I encountered Dr. Bruce Carter’s project, which sought to determine the effect of a protein called Jedi-1 on neurogenesis within the subventricular zone, I was instantly captivated. I planned and conducted experiments that included microtome sectioning of brain tissue, immunofluorescent staining, fluorescent imaging, and quantification of data. Also, I wrote a protocol for a quantification method I helped develop. I will be working in Dr. Carter’s lab as a research assistant starting June 8th, 2020.

Child Life Volunteer

September 2016 - May 2020

The Child Life Services program consists of specialists whose sole job is to ensure the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital patient experience is as comfortable as possible. Volunteers spend time with patients to alleviate the emotional trauma of hospitalization through arts and crafts, discussions, mentorship, games, toys, and friendship. The volunteer's goal is to personally connect with patients and families, providing them with a welcoming sense of warmth in their time of need. After four years of volunteering in the general playrooms, myelosuppression unit, and surgery waiting room, my ability to connect with and listen to others has significantly strengthened.
