Jean’s Medical School Qualifications
Jean has helped clients get into these schools:
I am a senior undergraduate student at Duke University who recently completed the medical school application process, receiving 15 interviews and planning to matriculate at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Many of my interviewers specifically highlighted my personal statement in their compliments, and asked in depth about my secondaries. As someone without any significant X factors or super high stats, I strongly believe that my essays played a significant role in having a successful application cycle. I work closely with students to develop a compelling personal narrative that not only highlights their strengths and experiences but also feels genuine to who they are. My goal is not to impose a formula, but to help you identify the themes that naturally emerge from your journey and refine them into writing that is cohesive and memorable. In addition to my application experience, I have served as a college admissions mentor for high school students and as a biology tutor throughout college. These roles have strengthened my ability to build meaningful one-on-one relationships, tailor my guidance to individual needs, and support students as they grow in confidence and self-awareness. I also bring a strong foundation in narrative medicine. In addition to taking multiple creative writing and narrative medicine classes, as well as helping launch a Humanities in Medicine club, I have read extensively in this field and curated a collection of impactful works that explore storytelling in healthcare, offering you new ways to frame your story with depth and nuance. Having applied to nearly 50 medical schools, I am also familiar with a wide range of secondary prompts and institutional priorities. I can provide targeted guidance on how to approach different types of essays and strategically align your narrative with each school’s mission and values, while still maintaining authenticity.

About Jean
Hello, my name is Jean, and I am a senior at Duke University majoring in Biology (B.S.) and Environmental Sciences & Policy (B.S.). I didn’t enter college on the premed track, but discovered my interest in medicine after taking a medical ethics course. At first, I felt behind and uncertain about my decision, especially compared to peers who had long been committed to this path and understood the application process well. To explore my interest, I shadowed physicians, worked as a nursing assistant, and attended any panels or webinars related to medical school that I could find. Over time, these experiences helped clarify my motivations and feel confident going into the application cycle. By the end of my junior year, I felt ready to reflect on my journey and share my experiences. Although a finger injury and subsequent surgery prevented me from pursuing clinical or extracurricular activities that summer, it unexpectedly gave me the time to focus deeply on my writing. I dedicated significant effort to prewriting, revising, and refining my essays, prioritizing quality over speed. My goal was to genuinely convey my passions and the experiences that shaped them. This approach ultimately led to 15 interview invitations and an acceptance to one of my top-choice schools, Vanderbilt. During interviews, I was asked in depth about nearly every aspect of my personal statement, primary application, and secondary essays, which reinforced just how critical strong writing is in the admissions process.
Why do I coach?
Applying to medical school is complicated and stressful, and I could not have navigated the process without a strong support system. From my research mentor and prehealth advisor to my parents, who patiently read through countless rough drafts, it was their guidance and encouragement that helped me feel confident in both writing about and speaking to my experiences. Working with students who are struggling to reflect on their journeys, I find it especially rewarding to sit down and brainstorm their motivations and stories together. To me, writing is like assembling a puzzle: it involves laying out ideas, experimenting with different approaches, and finding a way to bring everything together into a cohesive narrative. As an undergraduate, I often wished I had a mentor to guide me through this process, and help me understand how to approach these essays when expectations felt unclear. Because of that, I strive to create a supportive space where students feel comfortable exploring their experiences and confident presenting their authentic selves throughout the application cycle.
