About Gary
Hi there! 👋 I'm a software engineer who has been working in the tech industry since 2014. As a technologist, I started from a non-traditional background, having originally studied music in college and switched career 4 times before getting into IT and then software development, worked my way up to lead software developer at Salesforce. (I did get a Master's Degree in CS along the way). I am also an avid investor and lifelong learner. I don't give advices but will instead ask questions to guide you to find your own path. This coaching method is designed to help you gain clarity, get creative, and boost self-confidence.
Why do I coach?
I coach because I have fun doing it while you benefit. It's a win-win situation!

Senior Software Engineer
Salesforce
January 2022 - January 2024
MuleSoft (the child company of Salesforce) Content Experience (CX) team implemented Antora to build the MuleSoft docs site (docs.mulesoft.com), and they were looking for a hybrid web/DevOps engineer to both work on the website development and maintain publishing pipelines and enhance authoring tools for the technical writers. I am a generalist who knows a little bit of everything and also worked on implementing a similar project at Namely where I used Mkdocs to create internal documentations, so they hired me. Frontend development lead responsible for: ➢ creating a delightful and accessible user experience for MuleSoft's technical customers by building new features for docs.mulesoft.com, refactoring Node.js codebase, and resolving 90+% of accessibility issues ➢ enhancing technical writers' productivity by creating and maintaining tools, runbooks & scripts for them, so they can focus on writing instead of troubleshooting technical issues ➢ acted as product manager for a few months, efficiently managing team projects by running all kanban rituals and planning & writing up all team epics ➢ promoting a healthy collaboration and self-service culture by writing and organizing handbook-style internal documentation Scrum, Node.js and +4 skills

DevOps Engineer
The Wing
March 2021 - September 2022
The Wing hired me as a contractor to maintain their EKS infrastructure after their Lead DevOps Engineer left. The existing setup had several issues: poor documentation, outdated tools, and uncontrolled cloud spending. I addressed these problems by: - Reorganizing and updating Confluence documentation, creating tool documentation with self-service runbooks, and expanding infrastructure-as-code to include Terraform, Helm charts, and YAML manifests. I also documented the backend API with a Postman collection. This improved team visibility, which aided IWG during their acquisition of The Wing. - Upgrading tools like EKS and HashiCorp Vault. I also improved Codefresh CI/CD pipeline efficiency by 30% and increased unit/API test coverage from 40% to over 70%, enhancing application reliability and deployment speed. - Reducing cloud costs by over 80% by using New Relic and Pixie observability data to rightsize Kubernetes resources and leveraging AWS cost management tools. Terraform, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) and +4 skills
Applications Engineer
Snap
May 2021 - January 2022
IT Technical Lead responsible for: ➢ evangelizing Snap's Jira and Confluence ecosystems to all Snap personnel by creating documentation, including multiple "quickstart" hands-on labs to help self-onboard engineers to create Atlassian integrations, reducing the related ops activities to nearly zero. Also migrated Jira project management into terraform templates, turning Jira project creation into another self-service ➢ automating Jira scripting development lifecycles by creating a CI/CD pipeline to automatically test, lint, and deploy the scripts. I also refactored groovy functions into reusable libraries, and wrote unit testing code to maintain a 70+% code coverage ➢ providing IT leadership the capability to view key performance metrics by building data pipelines using python and Google Cloud and visualizng the data on Looker Terraform, Cloud Computing and +4 skills
