About Fred
I am a recent BA Maths and MSci Systems Biology graduate from Cambridge, tutoring for the last 6 years. I primarily specialise in university admissions for Mathematics, and now Natural Sciences - with 350+ hours of experience. I have helped over 30 students receive offers from Oxbridge, and assisted with various other elements of applications (tests, interviews, personal statements). The majority of my tutoring experience has been Oxbridge Mathematics admissions preparation. This includes lots of mock interview practice sessions, tutoring for MAT and STEP, and guidance with personal statements. I have spent 150+ hours providing mock interviews for over 30 offers, and have a personally organised question bank. I have also had experience tutoring TMUA preparation, which I sat myself. Now that this is mandatory for applying to Maths at Cambridge, I am well prepared to help out with this element. Similar to my University studies, I have tutored broadly across other (maths-adjacent) subjects, such as GCSEs, A Levels, Natural Sciences admissions, ESAT, Maths Olympiad, and USA applications has given me am understanding of the variety in students aims and learning styles - which provides me with the confidence to help any student, and set creative questions which appeal to ones own interests.ments of applications (tests, interviews, personal statements).
Why do I coach?
I really enjoy the puzzle of figuring out how to best support a student, and the gratification that comes with success. As a student, I was never seen as a potential Oxbridge candidate, but managed to 'coach myself' to apply, get an offer, and pass the admissions tests. Now, I believe everyone should be given the chance to fulfill their full potential. I often prefer to let the student guide the lesson. For example, I may ask which topics they would like to look at, and work with them on their solutions to a problem. However, I do believe that problem solving ability is best improved when you are challenged. So I will often scale the difficulty of a question up until the student begins to find it difficult (a similar idea to most Oxbridge interviews), but make sure that I am ready to guide in the right direction, or give a helpful example when needed. I also have experience tutoring GCSEs and A-Levels, for Maths and Sciences. Variety in my tutoring experience makes me very adaptable.
