About Chris
Let me set aside the credentials for a moment and share five personal things about me: 1) I’ve been happily married for 25 years and live in the Chicagoland area. My wife and I have two sons, now 20 and 21. 2) I became a high school English teacher for a few key reasons: – A handful of teachers made a lasting impact on me, and I admired them. – I love exploring literature and core questions of human existence. – Time and autonomy mean more to me than material things or titles. – I genuinely enjoyed high school and still enjoy being around teenagers. 3) I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nine years (including a nine-month break for ACL surgery). To me, Jiu Jitsu is a metaphor for life: we wrestle with problems daily, and the best way through is trial, error, and trying again. 4) At 17, I spent a summer as an exchange student in New Zealand. That adventure sparked my love for travel and my desire to see new places and experience different cultures. 5) I’m passionate about the outdoors. I believe in the healing power of nature--the beauty of trees, mountains, lakes, and the simple joy of gathering around a campfire with loved ones. When life gets hectic, I crave unplugging and reconnecting with nature, with others, and with myself.
Why do I coach?
Honestly, this work is a vocation for me--something I’ve genuinely been called to do. I believe that once you discover your strengths, it’s your responsibility to cultivate them and use them to make a positive impact. For me, that means putting goodness into the world through education and mentorship. I’ve been a teacher since graduating college in the late ’90s. Since then, I’ve taught thousands of teens, tutored countless students, and coached hundreds of athletes. I coach prospective college undergrads because it’s an honor to support others on their journey, and it's profoundly rewarding to witness their growth. I coach because it’s meaningful. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
