Carlos’s Medical School Qualifications
Hello everyone! My name is Carlos and I am a first-year student at Harvard Medical School. I graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2023 with a B.S. Social Justice in Medicine. At William & Mary, I attending on a full-ride through the 1693 Scholarship. I also received a number of academic honors, including the Albert & Phyllis Pre-medical Award, Hulon Willis Memorial Scholarship, and the Lord Botetourt Medal (given to the most distinguished undergraduate in the class). I applied to 20 U.S. medical school and was offered interviews at 16. I ended up attending 12 interviews, and was accepted at 8 of the schools and waitlisted at the other 4. At Harvard, I am a part of the Dean's REACH Scholarship program where I receive almost full finding for my 4 years. I have some interest in pursuing cardiology or dermatology, but am still exploring my options as a first-year. I am happy to help others achieve their medical school goals by reviewing essays, providing application/interview advice, and providing MCAT advice!

About Carlos
In high school, I experienced a traumatic injury that brought me into the emergency room and sparked my initial interest in healthcare. While I had always been drawn to the sciences, this experience made me especially attuned to the humanity at the core of medicine—the trust, communication, and empathy that define the physician–patient relationship. My interest deepened further during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I witnessed the strengths and shortcomings of the U.S. healthcare system unfold in real time. These experiences shaped my motivation to pursue medicine not only as a way to care for individual patients, but also as a pathway to advocate for communities that continue to be underserved and marginalized in healthcare. I went on to apply to medical school during the 2022–2023 cycle and was accepted to several of my top-choice institutions, including Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Penn, and Yale. I ultimately matriculated at Harvard Medical School as a REACH Scholarship recipient after graduating from the College of William & Mary with a B.S. in Social Justice in Medicine. Because the application process still feels very recent to me, I’ve spent the past few years informally mentoring friends and mentees through it, helping them navigate everything from personal statements and secondary essays to interview preparation. I’m excited to formalize that experience and support future applicants in telling their stories clearly, confidently, and authentically as they pursue their own goals in medicine.
Why do I coach?
I know firsthand how challenging and overwhelming the medical school application process can be. From fragmented advice across pre-med communities to uncertainty about how you measure up, it’s easy for strong applicants to second-guess themselves or lose direction. I want to help students cut through that noise and approach the process with clarity, strategy, and confidence. By sharing my own experience navigating this path, I aim to give applicants practical insight into what actually matters, how to present their story effectively, and how to stay grounded while pursuing ambitious goals. Most importantly, I want students to recognize that their goals are genuinely within reach. With the right guidance and perspective, the path to a top-choice medical school becomes less about uncertainty and more about execution and belief in the work they’ve already put in.
