I spent more than two decades as a leadership educator--five years as Executive Director for the Center for Leadership Development and Research at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, as well as VP of Programs at American Leadership Forum. After helping launch the core leadership curriculum in the Stanford MBA Program and developing popular Exec Ed programs, I realized post-COVID that the leadership tools we were using felt stale. I began exploring the impact of technology (AI) on leadership and teams, and developed a course at Stanford called 'Leading Teams in the Era of AI.' That was the beginning of a quest to understand how AI is impacting teamwork, management, and culture in organizations, and to develop protocols that leaders can use to regain a sense of strategic control. Think change management for times when technological change keeps accelerating. While I've developed software with AI and built AI-enabled platforms (e.g. mbai.app), my focus here is centered on the human element of 'building with AI.' How can we best work with others when it's tempting to just delegate to 'agents'? And when these agents proliferate, how do we navigate the tradeoffs so our human colleagues don't lose their sense of agency? To the extent I focus on AI technology itself, it's primarily ways that LLMs can be tools for interpersonal and managerial effectiveness, rather than engines of technical innovation, productivity, or cost-savings. I have been in tech working with AI for over 10 years at Google and Meta. I now teach AI in Marketing at the University of Washington and ELVTR online. I coach from lived experience across every stage, startup to public company, not from a framework.

I spent 5 years at OpenAI (2016-2021) during the foundation of modern AI, followed by 3 years as Head of AI - Product Experience at Spotify, where I led teams building AI systems that served 500M+ users. I wasn't just using AI tools. I was in the rooms where architectural decisions were made about how humans and AI systems should interact at scale. That experience taught me something critical: the professionals who thrive in the AI era aren't the ones with the most tools, they're the ones who understand system architecture. After leaving Spotify, I transitioned to independent consulting and immediately hit the same wall my clients now face: tool chaos. I was paying $847/month across 15+ AI subscriptions, constantly context-switching, and seeing diminishing returns. So I applied the same systems thinking I used building products at OpenAI and Spotify to my own productivity stack. The result was the MAO Framework. A methodology that helped me consolidate to 6 core tools while tripling output. Since then, I've helped dozens of professionals (from Microsoft PMs to JPMorgan strategists) escape tool overwhelm and build AI productivity systems that compound rather than just consume budget.
