I worked with Madeleine from the very early stages of my PhD application journey, when I had decided to apply but had little understanding of how the U.S. system actually works. As an international applicant, that initial gap felt significant, and her guidance immediately made the process clearer and more navigable. Having someone whose knowledge I trusted made me feel far less like an outsider. We worked together from the formulation of my research idea through to the final stages of my application. She helped me refine and develop my project, and provided detailed, thoughtful feedback on my statement of purpose and personal statement. She also guided me through more strategic aspects of the process, such as reaching out to potential advisors, and remained consistently available throughout. Madeleine not only helped in terms of clarity and structure, but the depth of her thinking has made my own thinking sharper. I found her questions and feedback both rigorous and intellectually engaging. She pushed me to sharpen my arguments and situate my work more precisely within the field. I’m very glad I had the opportunity to work with her.
