That is all fine, but it does not help much when it is October, you have 650 words in front of you, and you still cannot tell whether the essay is actually doing its job. This session is about what comes after that. I will walk through ten things I look for when I read a personal statement, based on the same issues and patterns I see come up again and again in student drafts. We will cover: 1. What admissions officers are actually looking for in the personal statement, and how that should shape what you write 2. Why the opening matters less than people often think, and what really carries an essay 3. The difference between having a topic and actually making a point about yourself 4.
