About Tony

Tony Galente is an operator who learned the work from the ground up. He started at Marriott as a front desk agent in San Diego and, within two years, was running HR for three properties and 600 employees. He moved into automotive retail at Van Tuyl Group, the largest privately-held dealer in the country at the time, and went from salesperson to Finance Director in eighteen months. In 2014 he joined Coastal States Automotive Group as SVP, Sales and Operations. Over the next seven years he built the operating model that took the group from 6 rooftops and $50M in revenue to 14 rooftops and $250M, culminating in the 2021 sale to AutoNation for $550M. The lever underneath every chapter was the same: a twenty-year working study of behavioral science applied to real people and real revenue. After the exit he founded Tailored AI Group and went to MIT for AI and Machine Learning. He now functions as fractional CTO to mid-market service businesses, shipping production AI-enabled software across 27 engagements. The operator who now ships the code.

SVP Operations & Sales

Coastal States Automotive Group

February 2014 - October 2021

Family-owned auto retail group. Held P&L accountability across sales, F&I, fixed operations, marketing, HR, M&A, technology, and vendor management. Partnered with Owner, CFO, and COO to drive group-wide performance. Architected the operating model that scaled the group from 6 rooftops to 14 and delivered the 2021 sale to AutoNation for $550M. • Scaled group revenue from $50M to $250M over 7.5 years (5x growth, ~23% CAGR), culminating in the $550M exit to AutoNation in 2021. • Grew monthly sales volume from ~350 units across 6 stores to ~1,000 units across 14 stores while simultaneously lifting per-store throughput. • More than doubled average gross profit per deal from $2,500 to $5,500 round trip across the group (front-end plus F&I combined), driving sales gross from ~$10.5M/year to ~$66M/year. • Doubled F&I performance per retail unit, the single largest margin lever in auto retail economics and a primary driver of the group's valuation at exit. • Cut group-wide turnover from 80% (industry default) to 25% across 250 employees by rebuilding operational workflows across every department with deterministic automation, removing manual administrative burden, and freeing staff to focus on revenue-driving activity. Morale and compensation improved alongside. • Led fixed operations turnaround across service, parts, and body shop through the same process-automation approach applied to sales and F&I. • Integrated every acquisition onto the operating model without losing store leadership continuity. • Reported to the Owner, CFO, and COO. Functioned as the group's operating partner day-to-day across sales, F&I, fixed operations, marketing, HR, M&A, and technology.
