About

I came into product management sideways — no technical background, no CS degree, just a lot of curiosity and a willingness to be the least technical person in the room until I wasn't. I've spent my career since then building things from scratch: launching new products at early-stage startups, leading consumer products at bigger companies, and most memorably, building and launching Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs. These days I'm Chief of Staff at Hinge, where I also lead our growth products team. What I care about most, though, is less than resume line items and more "how do I actually break in / level up / figure this out" moments, because I've lived a lot of them myself. I spent years convinced I wasn't "technical enough" to be a real PM, and I had to build that fluency the hard way, on the job, often by asking questions I was embarrassed to ask. That experience is probably why I've ended up coaching so many people into their first PM role, both inside and outside my own companies. I recognize the specific kind of stuck they're in, because I was there too. If you're trying to break into product from a non-obvious background, feeling out of your depth technically, or staring down a 0-to-1 problem with no clear playbook, I'd love to help you work through it.

John’s Product Management Qualifications

Experience level: Group Product Manager

I've spent my career in product management, most recently at Hinge, where I was a Chief of Staff and now lead our growth products team. Along the way I've worked across some unconventional corners of PM: building new products at startups in the edtech and health tech spaces, leading large-scale consumer-facing products at bigger companies, and working on both internal digital transformation and external, customer-facing products. I built and launched Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs, where I stayed on afterward as an advisor on product strategy, and most recently partnered with MBA students on an experiential learning program, coaching them on product management best practices. I came into product management from a non-technical background, which means I've had to build my technical fluency the hard way -- and I think that makes me a better coach for anyone worried they're "not technical enough" to break into PM. Most of my experience is in 0-to-1 work: taking a rough idea through product discovery and turning it into something real, often with more ambiguity than resources. I've also spent a lot of time on the people side of the job -- managing and mentoring teams of PMs day-to-day, and coaching several colleagues (both inside and outside my company) into their first PM roles. If you're trying to break into product, level up in your current role, or navigate a 0-to-1 problem with an unclear path forward, that's where I can help most

Why do I coach?

I've navigated most of my career through mentorship — people who took the time to explain the unwritten rules, vouch for me in rooms I wasn't in, or just tell me the thing I needed to hear at the right moment. I didn't always have that kind of support, especially early on, and I know what it's like to be figuring it out more alone than you'd like. That's a big part of why the people-management side of my job has always been the most rewarding part for me, and why I keep showing up for colleagues who are trying to break in or level up. If a little bit of guidance changed things for me, I want to be that for someone else.
