About Angelo
I have a lot of beliefs, a selection of which strongly influence how I coach: - In the words of Ted Lasso, all people are different people. I strive for empathy and understanding, to treat everyone as an individual, and assume best intentions and effort - No one is fixed and everyone has the potential to grow and improve, especially if they combine motivation, instruction, and diligent practice - We perform the best when we're performing for a meaningful purpose; and, often, we find a lot of purpose in helping or supporting others - Everything is easier when it's fun - Matzoh ball soup is the best soup (currently #1 in my soup power rankings — not relevant to coaching, but in case you wanted to know) Hopefully these beliefs give you an idea of what to expect from working with me. Some additional fun facts about me: - I had a short-lived but very fun stand-up comedy career - I'm in the 9th of 9 divisions of an adult recreational ice hockey league (I am bad at hockey) and in the fourth of five divisions in a recreational trivia league (slightly less bad at trivia) - I'm a (not very proud) recipient of the "Star Relationship Builder" award from the Wharton School - I was once a guest on the NPR program "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me"
Why do I coach?
I coach because I love seeing people go from "I can't" to "I just haven't yet" to "I did". My first coaching experience came from helping classmates with math homework in elementary school. It felt more exciting to me when a friend or classmate outperformed their own expectations than simply achieving my own. I limited myself to only tutoring and coaching math for a while, eventually culminating in being the head calculus tutor at my university for two years. It was the opposite when I started my career — as a young professional unsure about my own goals, it was the guidance and coaching of mentors and managers that gave me the critical tools to both choose a path and then succeed in it, for both tangible skills as well as larger strategic planning and decision-making. Later, when I was responsible for hiring and managing teams, and sometimes, whole companies, I gave back in-kind, modeling and providing an outsized focus on skills and career development. I believe we accomplish the most when we accomplish it together. What that looks like to me is both humbly offering ones expertise, and humbly receiving the help and expertise of others.
