I originated a prospective study of brain injury in big wave surfers, building the protocol from concept through IRB approval during my Discovery Year, and now serve as co-investigator under my faculty mentor from the department of neurology. The work secured competitive AAN Medical Student Research Scholarship funding and collected data from 20 participants across 203 sessions using accelerometry, validated concussion assessment (SCAT6), and wearable biometrics. We have a manuscripts in submission and another in preparation for peer-reviewed publication, an oral presentation accepted to the International Neurotrauma Society conference (Cartagena, Oct 2026), and a British Journal of Sports Medicine submission.
