Strengthen Your Architecture & Design Portfolio

Vaishnavi M.
By Vaishnavi M.Harvard GSD Alum | Architecture & Design Masters Applications

Embarking on a journey to strengthen your architecture and design portfolio is a pivotal step towards securing a spot in a top-tier master's program. With my guidance, you’ll craft a compelling application that not only showcases your unique talents but also aligns with the strategic goals of your dream schools. Having earned my Master in Design Studies from Harvard Graduate School of Design and an M.Arch II from the University of Michigan, I understand the nuances of what top programs seek in candidates. My experience spans the intersection of architecture, technology, and entrepreneurship, equipping me with the insights to help you stand out in a competitive field. Here's how we'll work together: Portfolio Audit: I’ll review your portfolio as a whole — looking at its strengths, weaknesses, missed opportunities, visual communication, narrative clarity, and how effectively it represents you as a designer. Project Selection & Sequencing: We’ll look at what stays, what goes, what needs more attention, and whether your strongest projects are being presented in the right order. The goal is to create a portfolio that builds a story rather than simply showing project after project. Narrative & Storytelling: We’ll look at how clearly each project communicates the problem, your thinking, your process, your contribution, and the outcome. We’ll identify where descriptions, annotations, diagrams, or supporting material could make your work easier to understand and remember. Layout & Visual Communication: We’ll review hierarchy, pacing, composition, drawings, diagrams, imagery, typography, and page layouts to identify where the presentation can become clearer and more compelling. School & Program Positioning: A portfolio for an M.Arch application may need to communicate something different from one targeting MDes, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or Design Technology. We’ll discuss how your portfolio aligns with the programs you’re targeting and where it may need to adapt. Detailed Portfolio Feedback: You’ll receive specific, actionable feedback on what to improve before submission — so you’re not left wondering what to change or where to start. Let’s work together to transform your portfolio into a powerful tool that opens doors to the next stage of your academic and professional journey.

My approach combines a detailed portfolio review with a focused 1:1 critique. I review your portfolio before our session so I can understand the work as a whole — not just react to individual pages during the call. I look at project selection, sequencing, storytelling, design process, visual hierarchy, layouts, drawings, diagrams, and how clearly the portfolio communicates who you are as a designer. During our session, we’ll go through my feedback together, identify the strongest opportunities for improvement, and discuss specific changes you can make. My feedback is direct, practical, and tailored to the programs you’re targeting, so you leave knowing exactly what to prioritize before you submit.

  • A detailed portfolio audit identifying what’s working, what’s weakening your application, and the highest-priority improvements to make
  • A clear project selection, sequencing, and storytelling strategy to strengthen how your portfolio communicates your work and design thinking
  • Specific recommendations for improving layouts, visual hierarchy, drawings, diagrams, project descriptions, and overall presentation

I'm an architect turned entrepreneur, a Harvard Graduate School of Design alum, and a venture-backed founder who believes a background in architecture and design can open doors far beyond traditional practice. My journey has taken me from studying architecture in India and Italy to earning an M.Arch II from the University of Michigan and a Master in Design Studies from Harvard GSD, and eventually building technology companies in the United States. I co-founded ArchSlate, a venture-backed startup that raised $1 million, grew to over 100,000 users, and served 500+ architecture firms. I later founded Zenoya, a technology platform built to help architecture and design firms run their businesses more effectively. Along the way, I've experienced the challenges of choosing the right graduate program, building a competitive portfolio, changing career directions, starting a company, finding customers, and raising venture capital. I've learned what works, what doesn't, and how much the right guidance can change someone's trajectory. Today, I help three groups of people: ➜ Aspiring & Early-Stage Founders: Turn ideas into businesses. From validating your startup idea and building your first product to finding customers, developing your go-to-market strategy, and preparing to raise capital. ➜ Architecture & Design Students: Navigate master's admissions with clarity and confidence. I help students choose the right universities and programs, strengthen their portfolios, develop compelling applications, and prepare for graduate study in the United States. ➜ Architecture & Design Professionals: Figure out what's next. Whether you're feeling stuck, considering a career change, exploring opportunities in technology, thinking about starting your own practice, or questioning whether further education is worth it, I help you evaluate your options and build a practical path forward. My coaching is direct, personalized, and grounded in real experience. I don't believe in generic advice or one-size-fits-all roadmaps. Whether you're choosing your next degree, rethinking your career, or building your first company, my goal is simple: help you make better decisions, avoid expensive mistakes, and move forward with clarity and confidence.
