Your reel is your résumé. It becomes critical to the advancement of your career. But the quality of your work is only part of it. The relationships you build with the people around you matter enormously. So does the equity you build with people over time — how you work on a team, how collaborative you are, how committed you are and how much you contribute. The type of company you work for can also make a big difference. A small entrepreneurial company can have a very different culture and set of challenges from a larger business or one owned by a holding company. Understanding those differences can help you think about the kind of environment that works for you. As you progress, the skills required of you change. You might become a manager and suddenly find yourself managing people who were previously your peers. Now you're having salary conversations, developing people's careers and making decisions that affect other people. At a more senior level, you may be deciding salaries across a department, negotiating for resources with senior management and being challenged on the productivity of your team. You're responsible for hiring people and sometimes letting people go. You may also become more client-facing. That requires learning how to communicate with clients, read a room and represent the company you work for. As a VFX Supervisor, you may be on set making important production decisions where you need confidence in your judgment. I spent 30 years navigating these different stages myself, moving from artist to VFX Supervisor, department head and eventually Managing Director. This package gives you the opportunity to work with someone who understands those experiences firsthand. We can look at where you are in your career, what you're facing and where you want to go next. I can coach you through those decisions and, when useful, share what I learned from my own experience. Ultimately, your ability and the quality of your work remain fundamental. But as your career develops, how you work with people and the skills you develop around your craft can make an enormous difference to where your career takes you.

I started my career in Los Angeles, and over the next 30 years, I moved from Los Angeles to New York, from artist to creative leader, eventually becoming a Managing Director. I had challenges along the way, however I was ambition. I learned as I went — about creativity, business, leadership, relationships and myself. I made mistakes, pivoted when necessary, took opportunities and benefited enormously from people who saw something in me and helped me along the way. Along the way, I was fortunate enough to work with some incredibly talented people on memorable advertising projects, traveling the world and filming on location with famous athletes, actors and more. I like to think of those experiences as a reward for the time and effort I put into getting where I wanted to go. However, the thing that made the biggest impact on me was the people. People who became mentors and helped me along the way, and the friendships and relationships I made throughout my career. As I went from being an employee to managing employees, developing people's careers, and ultimately hiring and leading people, I discovered that this was the most fulfilling part of anything I ever did at work.
