Before You Submit: PhD Application Final Review
You've put considerable work into your PhD application. Before you submit, would a knowledgeable second perspective help you see what your materials communicate? Drawing on more than 20 years in graduate education, including leadership and admissions experience at MIT and Harvard, I offer a focused final review of your doctoral application materials. My approach looks beyond grammar and surface polish. I'll consider four questions: Preparation: Does your application show the experiences, knowledge, and skills you bring to doctoral study? Purpose: Is your emerging research direction clear, including what you hope to investigate or learn? Fit: Do your materials explain why this particular program and scholarly environment make sense for your interests and goals? Readiness: What is already working, and what deserves attention before submission? I'll review one near-final statement and academic CV for one PhD program, provide written feedback and a personalized Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot, and meet with you to discuss the most important next steps. The goal is not a perfect application or a prediction of admission. It's to help you communicate your preparation, research interests, and program fit clearly, credibly, and in your own voice.
What's included
I begin by reviewing your near-final statement, academic CV, application prompt, and information about your chosen PhD program. My review considers Preparation, Purpose, Fit, and Readiness. I'll look at how your experiences, research interests, and goals come together—and whether a reader can understand why this particular doctoral environment is a meaningful choice. You'll receive annotated feedback and a concise Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot highlighting what is working, what could be strengthened, and what still needs verification. We'll then meet for a 30-minute conversation to discuss my observations and your priorities before submission. My approach is collaborative, candid, and grounded in experience working within graduate education. I provide substantive guidance while respecting your voice, your circumstances, and your ownership of the application.
- Annotated feedback on one PhD statement of purpose or research statement (up to 1,500 words) and one academic CV (up to three pages).
- Personalized Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot identifying strengths to preserve, priority revisions, and important program or research-fit details to verify.
- One 30-minute individual debrief to discuss your feedback, answer questions about the review, and clarify your final revision priorities.

That’s where my work begins. Through Anglón Practice, I offer graduate school advising, mindful coaching, and mindfulness meditation courses and guided practice. Through mindful coaching or meditation courses, you can also explore ways to bring greater awareness and self-compassion into everyday experience. My advising draws on more than 20 years in graduate education, admissions, research pathways, funding, and student support, including leadership at MIT and experience at Harvard and the University of Maryland. I’m also a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach and a current USC PhD student. I’m completing my mindfulness teacher training, with certification anticipated in January 2027. Across all three streams, my approach is mindful, collaborative, culturally responsive, and systems-aware. Together, we’ll explore what matters to you, make information and options easier to understand, and pay attention to the strengths, relationships, resources, and circumstances shaping your choices.
