Gergely’s Public Relations Qualifications

Experience level: Executive

I've spent over 20 years building and running communications functions across Central and Eastern Europe — spanning journalism, agency leadership, and in-house corporate roles. I started as a journalist, which gave me an early, ground-level understanding of how media actually works and what makes a story land. From there I became a government spokesperson at a Ministry with a large portfolio in Hungary, managing media through high-pressure moments including the Russia–Ukraine gas crisis. I then spent nearly a decade running the Hungarian office of Grayling, a leading international public affairs and communications consultancy, leading its Central & Eastern Europe Public Affairs practice and advising clients on reputation, media strategy, and crisis communications. Most recently, I led Corporate Relations for Diageo across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, covering communications, government affairs, ESG, and crisis management in over 30 markets. Because I've worked inside a newsroom, a government press office, an agency, and a global corporate function, I understand PR from every angle — how journalists think, how messages get tested under political and public pressure, and how to build a communications strategy that actually holds up in a crisis. I coach on media relations, messaging and narrative strategy, crisis communications, reputation management, and how to build or scale a comms function.

About Gergely

I've spent my career at the intersection of politics, business, and communication — and most of that career has happened during a crisis of one kind or another. I started out as a journalist, then found myself as a government spokesperson in Hungary right in the middle of a Russia–Ukraine gas crisis, explaining to a frightened public what was happening to their heating bills in real time. That experience — being the person who has to translate chaos into something people can actually understand and trust — shaped everything that came after. I went on to run a public affairs agency's CEE practice for almost a decade, then spent nearly six years as a corporate relations director for a global company, working across more than 30 markets in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Along the way I've sat in every seat at the table: government official, agency advisor, and in-house executive. I know what it's like to be the person making the policy, the person advising on it, and the person whose company has to live with it — and I've built a genuine feel for how influence actually works in practice, not just in theory. Outside work, I'm a father of two and a lifelong amateur ice hockey player — still showing up for the early ice. I'm based in Budapest, and I like working with people who are trying to figure out where they genuinely fit in this field, not just the next line on a CV.

Why do I coach?

At Diageo, I worked with several leadership coaches over the years, and it changed how I think about growth — having someone outside your day-to-day who can really listen and ask the right question at the right moment is genuinely rare, and genuinely valuable. I want to be that person for someone else. I've also spent my career in situations most people never encounter — running crisis communications during an energy emergency, advising governments and multinationals in the same week, working across 30+ markets with completely different political and cultural realities. I don't think that makes my path the "right" one, but it's taught me that the best thing you can do for someone is listen first, before offering a different perspective. Ultimately, I coach because I want to make an impact — on people, on organizations, on how they show up in the world. If listening closely and sharing what I've learned helps someone see their own situation more clearly, that's worth doing.
