About Mat
I grew up in Salt Lake City, UT and graduated with a BS in Finance from the University of Utah. I completed 10 internships during my undergraduate years, all exploring different careers in corporate finance. Post graduation from undergrad, I worked full-time for Mizuho Securities' Technology Investment Banking group in San Francisco, CA. At that point, I was faced with a decision: recruit for full-time lateral investment banking positions at bulge bracket or elite boutique investment banks, in order to get the VC / PE interest I thought I wanted, or network and explore what Corporate Development avenues were available to me. I ended up landing two Corporate Development Associate offers from PE-backed software companies. I worked for a SaaS company that acquired 4 companies, one of which I sourced myself. We tripled growth during my time at the company and recapitalized at a 3x for our investors. I had an interesting opportunity to work at a PE-backed Dental Services Organization (DSO) for a year and, while I enjoyed my time, felt more drawn to a career with a technology emphasis. Currently, I help lead Corporate Development for a PE-backed GovTech SaaS roll-up. I continue to refine my skills, improve my investment process, and learn each day. I'd love to work with you on finding a career that you thoroughly enjoy.
Why do I coach?
Coming from a non-target state school with a modest GPA and lower standardized test scores—and without a Summer Analyst return offer due to COVID—breaking into investment banking full-time, and later transitioning to Corporate Development, required relentless effort and a strategic approach: strategic cold emailing, networking calls, and mock interviews. Private equity isn’t for everyone straight out of IB, and you can expect a variety of different bumps along the way. I'm here to help! I’ve found a career in Corporate Development that I truly love—one that offers daily challenges, career progression, continued learning and development, and an overall enjoyable lifestyle. I have spoken to many other Corporate Development professionals who echo this same notion. I strongly encourage anyone exploring corporate finance careers to learn more about Corporate Development. It provides a unique, rewarding trajectory that’s often overlooked. I’d be happy to help coach you through the recruiting process and prepare you to land your ideal next role—whether that’s in Corporate Development, investment banking, or something similar. Please reach out if you're interested in exploring.
