About

I came into banking from the British Army, not through the standard graduate route, so I know what it takes to break in from outside it. My first role was as an associate in project finance derivatives at Lloyds. I then built and led a corporate derivatives sales desk at SMBC, where I was a Managing Director. On that desk I interviewed and hired the people who joined my team. I help students, graduates and career changers prepare for sales and trading interviews. We work on the questions you will actually face: markets, products, how you would pitch an idea to a client, and why you want this desk and not another. I run realistic mock interviews and give you written feedback after each one, so you know exactly what to fix. Working with me is direct. I will tell you plainly where you stand, how an interviewer would see you, and what to change before the real thing. No coach can promise you an offer. My aim is that you walk in prepared and know how you will be judged.

Experience level: Executive

10+ Career Coaching clients

I spent more than 16 years in global markets at a major international bank, most recently as a Managing Director running a risk solutions business. My specialism is interest rate, cross-currency, inflation, FX hedging for corporate and institutional clients. I have sat on the other side of the table. I interviewed and hired the people who joined my team, so I know what sales and trading interviewers are really testing. It is rarely the textbook answer. It is how you think about a market move, how you explain a product to a client, and how you hold up under pressure. I will take you through realistic mock interviews, drill the technical and markets questions for the desk you are targeting, and give you direct written feedback after every session. Before banking I served as an officer in the British Army. I care about preparation, and I will tell you plainly where you stand.

Why do I coach?

I interviewed and hired for my own desk for years, so I know what sales and trading interviewers are really looking for. Most candidates never hear that from someone who has sat on the other side of the table. As a student, I would have paid for that conversation. Coming into banking from the Army, I had to work much of it out for myself. Coaching lets me give candidates what I would have wanted then.

Managing Director

SMBC

June 2013 - July 2025

Hiring Manager

Built from zero and led the bank's European corporate derivatives sales desk in Global Markets (sales and trading), covering multinational corporates and infrastructure companies (called risk solutions at the bank). Also headed the UK corporate franchise. Team across London, Paris and Frankfurt, clients in nine countries. Hired the people who joined the desk. Worked on the trading floor every day alongside sales, structuring and trading. Oversaw sales structuring, UK corporate DCM origination (2021 to 2023) and public bond markets. Products: interest rate, FX, cross-currency and inflation hedging for listed corporates, infrastructure, utilities, real estate and pension funds. Structured and priced hedges around new bond issues in six currencies, with the trades run through the book alongside the traders. Built XVA and capital costs into client pricing. Third place, Most Impressive Bank for Corporate Swaps and Derivatives, GlobalCapital Awards 2022, voted by corporate clients. What this means for candidates: I know what sales, structuring, trading and DCM each look for when they hire, and how the desks work together on the floor.

Officer in the Royal Logistic Corps, British Army. Left the Regular Army as a Captain in 2009. Led 270 soldiers and planned logistics operations. Officer selection and training taught me how to prepare for a high-pressure assessment, which is exactly what a bank interview is.
