One unfortunate reality is that consulting and strategy roles are still largely built around target schools and MBA pipelines, where firms come to you. If you don’t have that, the system can easily overlook top talent like you, and it can be discouraging at first. I had my fair share of contacts tell me that because I didn’t go to an impressive undergrad or have an MBA, I would need to start somewhere else before landing at a big consulting firm. What I learned is that strategic networking is door number three. Most people just never learn how to do it. I was fortunate to have mentors who taught me. As a first-generation college graduate and professional services consultant, I feel an obligation to pay it forward. That’s why I coach. Over the last seven years, I have recruited into consulting and strategy roles at major companies (8 offers, 4 roles), built my career without a target school background, and grown my compensation 3x since my first role.
