Being a software dev in 2026 is a rollercoaster. The skills that once characterized a "full-stack" developer are table-stakes for any entry-mid level role. In fact, they'll probably fall short, as companies expect engineers to deliver value at every layer of the stack, from dev-ops to design and product thinking. Not to mention, the pressure to be an AI-powered productivity machine who elevates the nativeness of their team/org. That said, I don't think there has ever been a more fun time to build software. Having worked and helped hire at several startups and mid-sized companies, including the one whose software you're using right now, I know what makes or breaks an SWE interview and/or career.
