I’m International Master Adarsh Tripathi, a chess coach, player and author from India. I run ChessCoaching.org and have coached privately since 2020, working with students worldwide, from young beginners and adult improvers to titled players and international junior competitors. My coaching experience includes working with IM Daevik Wadhawan, FM Esshan Wadhawan and African Youth U16 Girls Champion Elizabeth Cassidy. Students I have coached have represented their countries at the World Cadets, earned medals at the US SuperNationals and won state championships. Alongside private coaching, I have taught at Magnus Chess Academy, also known as Silver Knights, and developed teaching material for its online summer camps. I have also authored courses for Chessable and TheChessWorld, including World Class: Ding Liren, The Art of Maneuvering and Skill Booster: Program for Club Players. My lessons are interactive and built around the individual. I ask students to explain their thinking, challenge their assumptions and work through positions themselves. Beyond lessons, I provide homework, study guidance, tournament preparation and regular feedback to parents.

Why do I coach?

As a child, I sometimes found chess lessons overwhelming or monotonous. I loved the game, but the way it was taught did not always make room for my curiosity or energy. That experience has stayed with me as a coach. I want my students to enjoy thinking for themselves. My lessons involve questions, discussion and plenty of opportunities to make mistakes and understand them. Knowing why a student chose a move often tells me more than whether the move was correct. Tournament results are rewarding, but so are the smaller changes: a student slowing down before moving, noticing an opponent’s idea or explaining a position with confidence. I enjoy being involved in that progress, and helping students and parents understand what to work on next.

April 2023 - Present

I write and present instructional chess courses, drawing on my experience as an International Master and a working coach. Published work includes World Class: Ding Liren for Chessable, alongside The Art of Maneuvering and Skill Booster: Program for Club Players for TheChessWorld. My work covers annotated games, written explanations, video instruction and practical exercises, with an emphasis on calculation, positional understanding, maneuvering and endgames. I use problems that arise in my own teaching to help shape explanations that students can apply in their games.

December 2021 - Present

Instructor at Magnus Chess Academy. Formerly known as Silver Knight Chess, the official chess academy of the one and only Magnus Carlsen I've had the privilege to work with many talented chess players at the Magnus Academy, teaching and analysing the game of chess with many up-and-coming superstars! I have written chess content and curriculum (summer camp content, for instance), and I look forward to continued endeavours with the amazing team at MCA and just as amazing, talented kids! The teaching I do is purely remote, and I typically handle a classroom of 8 students (as MCA puts it wisely, these classes are "semi-private lessons") aged 4–14 worldwide. I mostly teach the advanced classes, Kings and Queens, at the academy, but at regular intervals, I have also taught the more beginner classes (Rooks, Bishops, etc.). Taught online group classes for young chess players, including the academy’s advanced Queens and Kings levels. Alongside regular teaching, I developed instructional content and served as a primary author for online summer camp material. My work involved selecting instructive positions, explaining difficult ideas clearly and keeping students actively involved through questions, calculation and discussion. This experience strengthened my ability to teach children with different levels of experience, confidence and attention, while maintaining a clear learning objective for each session.
